Paramagnetic Putty

This seemingly lifeless putty will engulf any strong magnet in its vicinity. Scary & amazing stuff! It is jumping putty and parramagnetic putty all in one.

Place a blob of it near one or between two strong magnets and watch what happens! It works well with our neodymium magnets. Will keep all mesmerized for hours.

Please note: The putty is not a permanent magnet itself but contains tiny particles that are ferromagnetic (responds to a magnetic field) but is also a great Non-Newtonian substance (neither solid, nor liquid). When using a strong neodymium magnet it will eventually become a weak permanent magnet and can then lift thumb tacks and paperclips!

More information: This putty is a Non-Newtonian substance, which means that it doesn't follow the theory of viscosity that Newton observed. Viscosity is the "thickness" of a liquid, or its resistance to flow. (Honey, for example, has a much higher viscosity than water.) Unlike most liquids, however, this putty changes its behaviour based on the amount of force applied. If you pull it gently, it will stretch; if you pull it forcefully, it will tear. When you cool it down and apply the ultimate force with a hammer, it acts exactly like a solid and shatters as though it were ceramic.
