Vividly demonstrate the adiabatic ignition principle of the diesel engine (with no spark plugs)!
Insert a small wad of cotton in the gas chamber, compress the air with a firm stroke of the piston and see it burst into flames. Combustible compounds can spontaenously ignite from the heat generated when air is suddenly compressed (adiabatic compression). The auto-ignition temperature of cotton is around 229℃ and that is what the air gets up to in the tube!
