Magnetic Lodestone
Magnetic Lodestone

The name “magnet” comes from natural occurring lodestone found in Magnesia, Greece.  By the 12th century the Chinese were known to use lodestone for navigation.  The Vikings did the same. Only magnetite with a particular crystalline structure can act as a permanent magnet.

Lodestone will attract a compass, staples and iron filings. When suspended by a thread it will align itself along the Earth’s N-S axis.  Unique teaching aid.
